How to Choose an Air Purifier

Here are five things to consider as you choose a quality air purifier for your home.

Size of Your Room

Different air purifiers will work better in small, medium, or large rooms. Generally, small air purifiers work well in small rooms, and larger air purifiers work in large rooms. The product page will tell you the exact square footage that’s best.

For example, in a 200 square foot room, an air purifier might complete three air exchanges in an hour. This means that all the air in the room was filtered and replaced three times. Ideally, you want an air exchange rate of three to five per hour. Two per hour is alright and one is not ideal. That being said, one air exchange per hour is still better than none.

If you find an air purifier that does one air exchange per hour in your room, you’ll need a more powerful one.

CADR Ratings

CADR stands for clean air delivery rate. A CADR rating is a measurement of an air purifier’s effectiveness. There are different CADR ratings for filtering out smoke, pollen, and dust from the air. The higher the CADR rating, the more air the purifier filters. The volume of air cleaned is measured in CFM, or cubic feet per minute

CADR exclusively measures the efficiency of filtering particles, not gases.

The CADR rating should be about ⅔ of your room’s total area, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. For example, if your room is 15 feet by 16 feet, its area is 15*16=240 square feet. So you should aim for an air purifier with at least 240*⅔ =160 CADR rating.

If you’re curious about venting cooking odors to the outside, an air purifier can help with that too. But it’s not your only solution. There’s plenty of other techniques you can use to keep cooking odors at bay.

Or for more proven strategies on improving your indoor air quality, check out this article.

Portability

Air purifiers come in many different shapes and sizes. Some larger air purifiers are difficult to move, so keep this in mind when shopping. Are you going to travel with your air purifier? Do you want to move it from room to room? If so, go with a smaller, more portable air purifier.

Otherwise you can get a larger tower purifier that will sit in the same place in your home. This is a good option for a family room, dining room, or kitchen.

What type of contaminants are you filtering?

Air purifiers differ in their effectiveness at filtering different contaminants.

There are CADR ratings for smoke, pollen, and dust. So if you are filtering out any of those three contaminants, pay close attention to the corresponding CADR rating.

If you want an air purifier for cooking odors, I would recommend looking at the smoke CADR rating. If you can get the heavy smoke out, that will help significantly with the odor.

If you want an air purifier for pet odors or other contaminants, see if the product description mentions them.

Generally, air purifiers with a high CADR rating in any category will do a pretty good job of filtering out odors and other contaminants.

Maintenance Costs

Your biggest maintenance cost will be replacement filters. Most air purifiers have several different types of filters.

Mesh pre-filter: Clean your mesh pre-filter every four to six weeks. After a few months, it may need to be replaced.

HEPA filters: Clean your HEPA filters about every year.

Carbon filters: Replace your carbon filter about every four to six months. They typically cost from $20 to $50.

The filter that needs the most maintenance is the mesh pre filter.

To make sure you keep all your filters clean, inspect every one every four to six weeks when you clean the mesh filter.

The more often you use your air purifier, the more often you’ll need to clean the filters. Click here to learn more about how long you should turn on your air purifier.

In addition to filter costs, you’ll also need to pay for electricity.

It is pretty cheap to run your air purifier. Most air purifiers will cost between $5 and $10 per month to run 24/7 on max. So, most people will end up paying just a few dollars a month. If you run multiple air purifiers in your home, make sure to account for that.

Each state has a different rate for electricity. Just Google the electricity rate in your area and use that in your calculations.

The more watts your air purifier consumes, the higher your electric bill will be.

Let’s say you have a 40 Watt air purifier.

  1. Calculate the Kilowatts: 40 watts/1000 = 0.04 kilowatts.
  2. Calculate how many hours you will use your air purifier in a month. If the month has 30 days and you use it all the time, this will be 24 hours * 30 days = 720 hours.
  3. 720 hours x 0.04 kilowatts = 28.8 kWh
  4. .09 cents x 28.8 kWh = $2.59

Our 40-watt air purifier ended up on the lower end of the cost, at about $3 per month. Large air purifiers that reach up to 100 Watts can cost around $10.

You won’t always be able to find the wattage. Ask the manufacturer directly or look for a spec sheet with that information.

It might be even easier to use the air purifier for a month and look at your electricity bill. Then you’ve got an idea of the monthly cost.

That wraps up our article. Hopefully one of the 12 best air purifiers for cooking odors is a great fit in your home.
