Flooring

Do you put flooring under kitchen cabinets?

Yes, you can put flooring under kitchen cabinets. Installing flooring before cabinets gives the kitchen a much cleaner look. You don’t have to spend time cutting around the cabinetry.

Also, you can be flexible with the layout of the cabinets. You’re not committed to one layout as you would be if you install cabinets first.

But, installing flooring first costs a little more. It covers your entire room, even under the cabinetry.

You can also install your kitchen cabinets before flooring. This saves you time and money on flooring underneath the cabinetry that no one will see. It makes replacing flooring much easier and cost-effective down the line because you won’t have to remove the cabinets.

Also, by installing cabinets first, you won’t damage your new flooring during the cabinet installation.

If you install floating floors, it’s best to put in kitchen cabinets first. Unlike standard flooring which is glued down, floating flooring is not glued. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle: several pieces of wood combined together. This type of flooring may not handle the weight of cabinetry well over time. It may crack or buckle under the pressure of your cabinetry. To prevent this, start by installing your cabinets.

What flooring is best for the kitchen?

Tile flooring is one of the best options for your kitchen. Porcelain tiles are the most popular. They are durable, waterproof, stain-resistant, nonporous, and easy to clean. This is the perfect combination for a high-traffic area of your home that’s prone to spills and messes.

Hardwood is also a durable option, but it’s water-resistant, not waterproof. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it means you have to clean spills immediately to avoid damage to the flooring.

Can you put a refrigerator on vinyl plank flooring?

Yes, vinyl plank flooring is exceptionally durable. Just one plank will support several hundred pounds of force. So, you don’t have to worry about damaging your vinyl flooring under heavy appliances.

Avoid dragging the refrigerator into place during installation. This is one of the most common ways durable kitchen floors can become damaged.

Can you put engineered hardwood in the kitchen?

Engineered hardwood is a beautiful and durable option for your kitchen. It won’t absorb dust or debris and will rarely ever need replacement. But, keep in mind that hardwood flooring is not waterproof, only water-resistant.

Clean up all spills immediately and avoid steam cleaners to keep your flooring in great condition. Also, put all your indoor furniture on furniture pads. This will prevent scratching when you move the furniture.

Engineered hardwood is not as durable as real wood, but it can still last you years. If you’re installing a floating floor (i.e., the pieces are arranged in a puzzle and the floor is not glued down), it’s best to install kitchen cabinets first. Floating floors may buckle or crack under the weight of cabinets.

What brings down property value?

There are several things that bring down your property value. You may need to do some basic maintenance, perhaps a couple of renovations, before selling your home. Your location may also bring down property value for many reasons; we’ll list those below.

For a guide that goes more in-depth on each of these bullets, check out this article.

  • Building a home or remodeling without a permit
  • Mold or mildew damage
  • Deteriorating foundation
  • Damaged driveways or pathways
  • Damaged or old roofing
  • Leaky plumbing
  • Rotten wood
  • Poor or damaged air conditioning or heating systems
  • Frayed wires
  • Outdated kitchens and bathrooms
  • Near a registered sex offender
  • Near junkyards, power plants, hospitals, or factories
  • Next to a neighbor’s unsightly home
  • Wallpaper
  • Ugly landscaping
  • Old carpet
  • Warped floors
  • Paint chips or uneven coating
  • Near a poor neighborhood
  • Next to a freeway, busy city, or other noisy areas

What renovation adds the most value?

In today’s homes, kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most valuable remodels. Most people use the kitchen and bathroom multiple times a day, so they want it to be one of the nicer areas of the home. So, a renovated kitchen and bathroom is a great selling point for your home. They typically add the most value to your home compared to other renovations.

“Value” can also be subjective, though. For example, an avid cook will prioritize a nice outdoor kitchen and patio more than someone who likes to stay indoors. Or, if you live in a cold climate, an outdoor kitchen may not be as attractive to the potential buyer. So, it’s good to consider who your potential buyers are before pulling the trigger on a renovation.

In terms of cost, you won’t find a renovation that makes you money immediately. The most cost-effective renovations will recoup about 90% of the money you put in. According to Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value report, replacing your garage door has the highest return in 2021.

Is it better to move or renovate?

Cost and the scope of the renovation are the biggest factors when deciding to move or renovate. If you are remodeling your entire home, it will be quite difficult to live in during the remodel. Not to mention the cost will be steep. Map out all of the possible expenses for moving vs. renovating before making this crucial decision.

You will have more expenses if you’re moving, such as hiring removal companies, but they may be worth it if you’re doing enough renovation.

Be sure to consider the time it will take to tackle the move or renovation, too. Typically, moving will take longer than renovating. It’s important to write out a timeline so you get a rough idea of the time for the project.

Check out this article for more tips on determining whether to remodel or move. We break down all of the different expenses you may have when moving and renovating, and provide other helpful tips.

Is it cheaper to renovate or build new?

In most cases, it’s cheaper to renovate a home than build a new one. But, if you live in an area where the housing market is favorable, it might be worth it to build a new home. If you live in an area with a competitive housing market, it’s probably best to renovate.

To help you make this decision, map out an estimate for the total cost of renovation and the total cost of building a new home. You can find average remodeling and building costs online and use those as an estimate. Or, even better, message a few contractors in your area and take the average of their bids for each home project. Renovation and building costs will vary depending on the area you live.

When calculating the budget, also consider expenses. They may include required materials, labor costs, moving trucks, and more. Once you’ve calculated the budgets for remodeling and building a new home, compare the two.

What sells a house fast?

  • Set the price to sell (Don’t overprice)

If you set the price on your home listing too high, it will take longer to sell. You might end up knocking the price down anyway because you aren’t getting offers.

Typically, a better approach is to underprice the home slightly. This can create a scenario where you have dozens of offers and a bidding war ensues. Sometimes, buyers will bid competitively and the price will increase!

  • Clean the home and declutter the space

A clean home will look more attractive that’s dirty with a lot of things lying around. This is one of the easiest things you can do to prepare your home for selling.

  • Do any quick fixes

This may involve replacing some doorknobs or hinges, patching up paint chips, replacing light bulbs, or other small projects. You want your home to look as presentable as possible before opening it up to buyers.

  • Invest in some small upgrades

This could involve updated doorknobs and cabinet handles, new modern appliances, new paint, light switches, and more.

  • Spruce up the landscaping

Mow your lawn, trim trees, pull weeds, and double-check that your sprinkler system is working, to start. The front yard is the first thing people will see when they pull into your home. So it’s important to leave a good first impression. And of course, don’t forget about the rest of the yard!

  • Hire a professional photographer

Before people visit your home, they’ll probably have found you online. The pictures alone can decide whether someone wants to visit. Make sure you get them done professionally to maximize your chances of getting offers.

  • Take time to write a compelling listing

This is the one place where you can really capture potential buyers. Be sure to emphasize the best features of your home first. Leave out anything negative or that could be interpreted as a negative.

You can also talk about the area you live in; again, focus on the positives. If the area is not great, don’t talk about it.

And be sure to add professional photos into your listing. They can really make a difference!

  • Sell at the peak time

The peak time for buying homes is around March to the end of July. This can vary depending on your area, but most people look to buy homes in the spring and summer. If you know any real estate agents, ask them about the best time to sell. Or, ask friends and family who have sold recently in your area.

Time can make all the difference. If people simply aren’t buying, no matter how nice your house is, you won’t get many offers. But if you sell at the right time, you’ll get several offers. This gives you a lot of options when it comes time to sell.

  • Flex to potential buyers’ schedules

If you want to sell fast, be flexible. If you skip out on a few offers because of scheduling conflicts, you might regret it down the line.

  • Host an open house.

An open house is a great way to get several potential buyers to check out your home at the same time. Yes, an open house takes some time to prepare. But it cuts down on the time that it takes for you to schedule individual visits, and it can be exciting to see a lot of people checking out your home!

Can I sue my neighbor for lowering my property value?

It’s unlikely that suing your neighbor for lowering property value would be successful. In fact, between attorney costs and paperwork, it will be much more trouble than you probably want.

If you’ve already sold your home, it’s especially unlikely. It’ll be difficult to recoup the difference between the home’s anticipated value and actual selling price.

Talk to your neighbor and ask them to clean up a little bit before you sell your home. You can’t guarantee they’ll do it though, so it’s best for you to focus on other aspects of your remodel.

Don’t get consumed with your neighbor’s property. If you’re in a nice area, or if the home is nice enough, something like that will often be overlooked.

Does a messy house affect an appraisal?

In most cases, a messy house will not affect an appraisal. Appraisers ignore the clutter to determine the true value of your home. But, you are better off cleaning your house to give a good first impression when getting your home appraised.

It’s more common that structural damage or cracks in the foundation will affect an appraisal.

Do kitchen remodels add value?

Yes, kitchen remodels absolutely add value to your home! A minor kitchen remodel costs about $26,214 and returns $18,927 on average. This means you recoup 72.2% of the cost, according to Remodeling’s 2021 Cost vs. Value report.

A major remodel (flooring, cabinets, and counters) is not as cost-efficient, but it can be valuable if your kitchen is outdated. You may not like spending the money for the project, but a new kitchen can last you decades. So, it may be well worth it!

IKEA Kitchens

How much does an IKEA kitchen cost?

That depends on the type of kitchen you choose. IKEA has a few different options. The complete kitchen remodel is called the SEKTION kitchen. For this kitchen, you might pay about $10 to $15k for all the materials and $3,000 to $5,000 for the labor.

This price can vary depending on the type of material you purchase and the size of your kitchen.

Check out the rough breakdown of the cost for your complete IKEA kitchen below.

I’ve left out some miscellaneous accessories you can purchase, such as countertop lighting, interior cabinet lighting, remote controls for lighting, and more. These don’t tend to break the bank.

  • Doors and drawer fronts – from about $1,000 to $3,000
  • Cover panels for your doors – $25 to $265 per door
  • Decorative paneling – $25 to $100 for about 7 feet of decorative molding
  • Cabinet toe kicks or legs – about $25 per unit, some legs come in packs
  • Exterior cabinet lighting – about $25 per light
  • Countertops – laminate, wood, or quartz. Anywhere from $50 to about $250 for about every 7 feet of countertop. At the lower end you can buy laminate countertops, and at the higher end, you can buy thick veneer wood countertops.
  • Custom countertops – $50-70 per square foot
  • Sinks – $40 to $300
  • Faucets – $40 to $200
  • Cabinets – $20 to $100 per cabinet frame, depending on the type of cabinet. (Cost of labor approximately triples this price)
  • Open shelving – about $35 – $80 per unit
  • Drawers – $90-$110 per unit
  • Shelves – $10-$20 per pack
  • Hinges and fittings – about $10 to $40 per pack
  • Interior fittings and organizers – $5 to $10 per unit
  • Knobs and handles – $5 to $10 per pair

Are IKEA kitchens worth it?

For the price, IKEA kitchens are definitely worth it, especially because of their cabinet pricing. On custom cabinets alone, you can spend anywhere from around $4,000 to $25,000. $25,000 is almost as much as the entire kitchen installation! But IKEA’s cabinets are on the lower end of that price range.

Also, you will work with a professional installation team that will handle all aspects of your kitchen installation, from cabinets to doorknobs. Typically, you’d have to contact different companies for each installation. This can take a lot of time and burn a hole through your wallet, too. But you won’t have to go through that hassle with IKEA.

Is IKEA kitchen cheaper than Home Depot?

Most Home Depot kitchens cost between $20,000 and $25,000 while IKEA kitchens cost between $15,000 and $20,000. But, don’t let the lower price imply lower quality. It’s true that you have to build IKEA cabinets yourself and they aren’t very customizable. But most people prefer the quality, ease of installation, and great features of IKEA’s cabinets compared to Home Depot’s.

Is IKEA kitchen installation expensive?

IKEA kitchen installation is not very expensive at all. You will pay between $3,000 and $5,000 for the installation price of your IKEA kitchen. The bulk of this price is due to the cabinetry, which needs to be built.

If you have countertops, extra features, and knobs or hinges that require installation, you will be at the higher end of this price range. Otherwise, you’ll pay around $3,000.

Are IKEA kitchens high quality?

For the price, IKEA kitchens are of great quality. They have a range of options for every part of your kitchen, but it’s best to invest in the more expensive materials and hardware. Always remember that relative to a custom kitchen remodel, you are paying a third of that price or even less.

So it’s not a bad idea to “indulge” in the higher-quality IKEA materials so your kitchen lasts longer. It may prevent you from investing in costly repairs down the line.

Does IKEA have solid wood cabinets?

There are four product lines of IKEA doors and drawers that are made with solid wood: LAXARBY (birch), BJORKET (birch), FILIPSTAD (oak), and EKESTAD (oak or ash).

IKEA’s SEKTION cabinets are made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and melamine foil. MDF is a dense, durable wood composite that is great for painting and building, and melamine foil is a laminate that contains no real wood.

How long does an IKEA kitchen remodel take?

If you install the entire kitchen yourself, and have a fair amount of time on your hands, the installation will take about 2 weeks. It may take more or less time depending on how handy you are. If you hire a professional installer from IKEA’s team, they can have your kitchen completed in a week – or even a few days.

You also have to factor in planning. Planning your remodel includes:

  • Deciding what areas of your kitchen you want to remodel
  • Working with a designer (or yourself) to finish the kitchen design
  • Requesting a quote for the installation and materials
  • Buying those materials and getting them to your home

This can take about seven to 10 days or more if you stay focused on the remodel.

Can I install an IKEA kitchen myself?

IKEA kitchens are designed to be installed by you. Their efficient designs and well-coordinated products make IKEA a top choice for any DIY-er. If you’re not comfortable installing the kitchen yourself, IKEA has a professional team that can complete the install for you, top to bottom.

Will IKEA cut your countertops?

Yes, IKEA can cut countertops to any length you’d like. They can cut premade laminate or wood countertops to any size. Or, you can invest in custom quartz countertops for your new kitchen. With each slab of countertop that you purchase, you’ll get two edging strips as well.

How many times a year does IKEA have a kitchen sale?

IKEA runs their kitchen sale about four times a year. It lasts for about six weeks. This discount applies to new kitchen purchases of $2,000 or higher. It includes cabinets, countertops, lighting, doors, appliances, and much more.

Is IKEA kitchen design free?

Prior to installation, IKEA’s planning and design services are free. They include:

  1. Kitchen measurement – an IKEA professional will come to your home to measure your kitchen. They’ll enter the measurements into the IKEA Home Planner where you can map out the design and cost of your project. The measurement cost is refunded once you install your IKEA kitchen.
  1. IKEA Home planner – This is a neat online tool that generates a 3D model of your kitchen as you add the products and materials. It also calculates the cost as you craft your new kitchen. You can bring it to an IKEA store and discuss it with an experienced representative there to get some great advice for your new design.
  1. Consultation from your home or in the store – 90 minute online appointment or two hour appointment in IKEA where you will get professional help using the IKEA Home Planner. You can discuss every detail of your plan no matter how small. Be sure to 1) measure your space and 2) choose your products and materials before booking this appointment.

Which IKEA kitchen is the best?

IKEA has three popular “kitchen systems,” SEKTION, KNOXHULT, and SUNNERSTA.

SEKTION kitchens are the most customizable of the three. This is the best option if you are after your dream kitchen and you would like to have more flexibility and choices.

KNOXHULT is a more low-budget, minimalist kitchen. It features affordable products that are easy to assemble and install.

The final kitchen system, SOMMERSTA, is best for ultra-small single-wall kitchens. This kitchen is highly mobile, affordable, and incredibly easy to assemble.

What should you not buy at IKEA?

IKEA offers some high-quality products at an affordable price, but a few just are not up to par. Here are 10 products from IKEA that you’re better off avoiding or purchasing elsewhere.

  • Spatulas, whisks, and other utensils
  • Knives
  • Glassware
  • MALM dresser
  • Comforters
  • Bed frames
  • Luggage
  • Step ladders or step stools
  • Plastic cutting boards
  • LAGAN Microwave

Do IKEA cabinets have Formaldehyde?

None of the paint and lacquers that IKEA sells contain formaldehyde. IKEA is dedicated to reducing formaldehyde emissions, particularly in the glue used to make wood products. All IKEA suppliers must show that they are in compliance with IKEA’s safe formaldehyde levels before the products are sent to stores.

Are IKEA cabinets cheaper than Lowes?

IKEA cabinets are on average a little more affordable than most Lowes’ cabinets. The main difference is that Lowes’ cabinets come pre-assembled. Although it saves you time on the installation, they can be difficult to transport.

What are the least expensive kitchen cabinets?

IKEA’s kitchen cabinets are the cheapest on the market. They range from about $20 to $120 per frame. Lowes and Home Depot are a little pricier, but they’re a viable option as well.

What are the best kitchen cabinets for the money?

IKEA’s SEKTION cabinets are one of the best products out there for the money. They include base cabinets, corner cabinets, base cabinets with a built in oven, wall cabinets, and much more.

You even have some wall storage options such as open shelving, boxes, and drawers that you can purchase for extra storage.

How can I get free kitchen cabinets?

You can try browsing Craig’s List for free listings of kitchen cabinets. Facebook Marketplace is a great option to find free furniture, too.

You can also check out your local Buy Nothing Project group. They operate through Facebook – you join a group and post items that you want to give away or items that you need. Learn more on their website.

Most items for sale on Craig’s List and Facebook Marketplace are not free, but you might come across a good deal. FB Marketplace has a free category that you can check out. Just sort the listings by area.

I went to the link and immediately saw some free furniture available in my area like couches, shelves, and desks.

How can I save money on new kitchen cabinets?

1) Research door styles.

You have many different door styles to choose from. Typically, raised panel cabinets and pull-out cabinets are more expensive than flat panel cabinets. Cabinet handles also vary in price, but not significantly.

2) Go with more cabinet doors and fewer drawers.

Cabinet doors are less expensive than drawer frames on average. So if you’re on a tight budget, go with more doors and fewer drawers.

3) Avoid paint and stick with unfinished wood.

In today’s rustic kitchens, many homeowners simply avoid paint and instead put a finish on unfinished wood. This will save you money on cabinets as you won’t have to buy gallons of primer and paint.

4) Go light on the customization.

Ornate toe kicks, slide-out cabinets, pullout cabinets, fancy handles…these are a few things you can avoid to save money on your cabinets.

5) Consider open shelving instead of cabinets. Or mix shelving and cabinets.

Open shelving is significantly cheaper than cabinets, so you’ll save a lot of money if you go that route. You can also mix shelving and cabinets to save some cash.

6) Avoid glass-front cabinets.

Glass-front cabinets won’t break the bank, but they are more expensive than wooden cabinets. If you go with decorative glass, expect to pay even more for your cabinetry.

7) Think hard about your kitchen design. Do you need a kitchen island?

Most homes today feature a kitchen island, so you probably want one. But, if you have a lot of counter space or don’t need the extra storage, you’ll save some money on cabinets without a kitchen island. Not to mention that you’ll save the money it would cost to install the island, too.

8) Choose the right type of wood.

Cherry, birch, and mahogany can be quite expensive, while maple, oak, and pine are on the more affordable end.

9) Invest in laminate or thermofoil for your cabinet finish.

Thermofoil and laminate finishes are durable, easy to maintain, and incredibly cost-effective. Acrylic finish is on the pricier side and should be avoided if you’re on a budget.

10) Try particle board instead of hardwood.

Particleboard is an engineered wood that is paintable, pretty durable, and it doesn’t warp like hardwood can. It’s not quite as durable or water-resistant as solid hardwood. But it’s a great option if you’re looking to save money.

How do I know if my kitchen cabinets are of good quality?

Wall hood, granite countertops and kitchen island

1) Look for products with a lifetime warranty. This will reduce your risk of spending money on cabinets that break or wear down after just a few months of use.

2) Plywood is a reliable material for kitchen cabinets. It is much more durable and water-resistant than particleboard.

3) Cabinets assembled in a factory will last longer than ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets. Builders have the best tools, adhesives, and materials to make durable, high-quality cabinets. But, factory-assembled cabinets are much more difficult to transport than RTA cabinets. Without a large truck, it may take several trips to get all the cabinets to your home.

4) They are built with under mount drawer glides. Drawers sit on a mechanism called a drawer glide which allows the drawer to open and close smoothly. These can be mounted underneath the drawer or on the side.

Undermount drawer glides are more durable than the glides on the side of cabinet drawers.

5) The back of the cabinetry features a full-height panel. Some cabinet frames are built with thin pieces of plywood or they use a picture-frame construction that doesn’t support the full cabinet. These aren’t as durable as a full sheet of wood.

6) The cabinets feature high-quality adjustable hinges. This makes it easy for you to make small quick adjustments to your cabinet doors if needed. Instead of replacing the whole door, all you need to do is tweak the hinges and you’re done.

Are drawers better than cabinets?

Drawers are great to store cookware, silverware, spices, and small dishware. Drawers are quite convenient because you can pull them all the way out. So nothing gets buried like it might in the back of a dark cabinet.

But for larger pots and pans, you’ll probably need cabinets because of the added space. Also, drawers on average are more expensive than cabinets because they have more pieces as well as a gliding mechanism. So, if you’re on a budget, stick to doors instead of drawers.

Are solid wood cabinets worth the money?

Yes, solid wood cabinets are often worth the money. Much like a range hood, solid wood cabinets can last you a lifetime. So, even though you may spend more money to buy the cabinets, they likely won’t ever need to be replaced.

How many cabinets are needed in a kitchen?

The average kitchen will have around 20 to 25 cabinets. Larger kitchens may have 30 or more cabinets, while small kitchens may have less than 20 cabinets. In most kitchens, you’ll have more drawers than cabinets. This can get expensive, though. So you might consider investing in open shelving which is much more cost-effective.

White remains one of the most popular kitchen cabinet colors for 2022. Farmhouse kitchens are becoming more popular, the staple of these kitchens being traditional white shaker cabinets. Wood cabinets are also common in today’s kitchens.

In addition to white, off-white, grey, and beige are modern options for your kitchen cabinets. Today’s homeowners love neutral colors for their cabinets.

Can you install kitchen cabinets yourself?

Yes, there are two types of kitchen cabinets: ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets and pre-assembled cabinets. RTA cabinets are designed for you to install yourself. IKEA cabinets are the most popular RTA cabinets today.

What is the best time of year to buy kitchen cabinets?

There’s not really a “best time” of year to buy cabinets. Whenever you want to remodel your kitchen, look into buying cabinetry. Maybe ask your local stores if they have any deals coming up. It’ll save you some stress down the line if you don’t have to navigate around the best deals when looking to buy cabinetry.

If you’re on a tight budget, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are one of the best times of the year to buy kitchen cabinets at heavy discounts. You may also find great deals around Christmas, Fourth of July, or Easter.

Buying your cabinets isn’t really a huge commitment. Don’t let it keep you up at night. Once you buy cabinets, you can wait to install them until it’s convenient for you. Most homeowners prefer to install their cabinets in the spring or summer due to the warm weather.

If you have kids, summer might not be the best option because they will be home often.

You could also beat the remodeling rush and install your cabinets in the winter or fall. You might be able to find better deals or get the job done faster because few people remodel around that time.

What are the best inexpensive kitchen cabinets?

Any ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets will generally be much less expensive than pre-assembled cabinets. IKEA SEKTION cabinets are one of the most inexpensive RTA cabinet brands while still maintaining great quality for the price.

When buying cabinets, it’s important to strike a balance between price and quality. You want them to last for several years, but you might not have the budget for the most durable and beautiful cabinets on the market.

Kitchen Countertops

What goes first, sink or countertop?

It’s best to install countertops first. Before you plan for your countertops, measure out your sink and countertops on a template. Then when you get your countertops installed, the installers will cut out your sink. Just make sure you request that they do that when you book the install.

What are the disadvantages of quartz countertops?

  • Susceptible to heat (set hot pans on hot pads)
  • Can discolor in direct sunlight
  • Expensive, at $100 to $200 per square foot
  • May have noticeable seams

What is the best countertop for your money?

The best countertop for your money depends on your budget and how much energy you want to put into maintenance. Laminate is the most affordable, low-maintenance countertop material on the market. Quartz is a low-maintenance countertop too, but it costs more money on average.

If you want something durable and affordable, you can try granite countertops. But keep in mind that granite requires some yearly maintenance.

Kitchen Remodel 101

Should I redo my kitchen?

You should redo your kitchen every 10 to 15 years if you’re in your lifetime home. Avoid kitchen remodels if you are only going to be at your home or apartment for a few years. Also, unless your kitchen is incredibly outdated, don’t remodel before you sell your home.

Small upgrades and repairs are great and often necessary. But you don’t want to invest too much in a home that you won’t be living in.

Can I renovate my kitchen myself?

That depends on the scale of your renovation. Small upgrades like painting or DIY projects like installing ready-to-assemble cabinets can be done yourself. But, flooring, plumbing, electrical work, or any demolition are much more difficult to tackle alone.

Any electrical work, in particular, is dangerous to do without a professional. So, for a smooth experience, do some of the renovation yourself and enlist professionals for the more complex tasks.

How can I update my kitchen without renovation?

  1. Table runner and centerpiece

You can find a table runner and centerpiece online in just a few minutes. It’s a really easy minor upgrade that takes no time!

  1. Cabinet handles and drawer knobs

You might be in a position where your kitchen needs a little boost but you don’t have the budget to completely redo cabinets. In that case, just replace the knobs and handles. This is a fraction of the price and you can do it yourself.

  1. Under-cabinet lighting

Under cabinet lighting is a little luxurious but it’s a beautiful addition to your kitchen. It’ll take a little work to install the lighting in your cabinets but you don’t need to bother with any demolition.

  1. New light fixtures

Light fixtures are often overlooked and consequently outdated. There are countless options for light fixtures in your kitchen. Relative to a full-scale remodel, it’s a quick and easy way to add value to your kitchen.

  1. New paint

Sometimes color is all a kitchen needs to breathe some new life into the space. Think about some creative ways you can design your kitchen. Popular themes include beach, farmhouse, antique, tropical, cafe or diner-style…you have so many possibilities.

  1. New appliances

Stainless steel appliances are still the go-to choice for today’s kitchens. You can update anything from your toaster to your stove or refrigerator, depending on how much time you have on your hands.

One great trait of stainless steel is that it fits with pretty much any color scheme in your kitchen. So you don’t have to worry about finding an appliance that matches the rest of your space.

  1. Plants

Plants are a great addition to your new kitchen. They’re common in farmhouse kitchens and abundant in boho-style kitchens.

  1. New curtains

Curtains are a nice way to provide shade in a kitchen with a lot of natural light. Over time they can become bleached by the sun. So, buy some new ones for a quick and easy upgrade.

  1. Island seating or bar stools

If you have a large kitchen island, add some seating so you and your guests can socialize while you cook. For a bar-style island, invest in some bar stools. Otherwise chairs work great.

How long does a full kitchen remodel take?

Including packing and finalizing the design, the average kitchen remodel should take between two and three months. The total time for your kitchen remodel depends on the size of your kitchen and the quality of the renovation.

For example, marble countertops will take more time than laminate countertops. A custom kitchen island with pullout cabinets will take longer than a standard island.

In what order should I remodel my kitchen?

Pack up your kitchen.

The first step is to get your kitchen ready for a remodel. That means packing everything. Yes, everything! If you’re replacing large appliances like your refrigerator or stove, you can wait until last to remove those. Moving companies can help you get the large appliances out of your kitchen if you need the help.

For a step-by-step guide on how to pack up your kitchen to remodel, click here.

Start the demo process.

With your kitchen clutter free, it’s time to demo your cabinets, counters, flooring, walls…whatever needs demolishing. Before you go swinging a hammer, you should make sure that you will not interfere with any electrical wires in your home.

Also, keep in mind that “demo” doesn’t always mean breaking a wall down with a hammer. You might need to take a more methodical approach with hardwood flooring, for example.

If you want, you can hire a professional team to demo your kitchen. But with a free weekend a little research, it’s a project most homeowners can tackle themselves.

Install plumbing, HVAC, and electrical.

Plumbing, HVAC, and electrical are best left to licensed professionals. Use a tool like HomeAdvisor or Thumbtack to find certified professionals in your area.

Start cabinets and countertops.

Once you’ve got HVAC, electrical, and plumbing installed, it’s time to tackle the cabinets. You can do these after you do flooring, too, but cabinets before flooring is much more budget friendly.

You won’t have to install flooring that hides under cabinets. It also prevents potential damage to the flooring over time. Sometimes hardwood floors buckle and crack under the weight of cabinets and heavy countertops.

Install the flooring

You probably want to leave flooring to professionals too. My family and I installed flooring in our hallway and dining room, and it took several weeks to finish! So, it can be done. But you might be biting off a little more than you can chew. Do some research on the pricing in your area to help you decide on the best approach.

Bring in the appliances

With the foundation laid for your kitchen, it’s time to bring in appliances. Just like when you packed everything up, you might need help moving your appliances into the new kitchen. Moving and installation for your fridge, freezer, stove, and dishwasher can be complicated, so seek out a professional.

Also, don’t forget the small appliances like a blender, toaster, toaster oven, or juicer. You can bring these in easily yourself.

Add some fun decor.

If you want any plants in your kitchen, now’s the time to decorate. Curtains for windows, wall decor, maybe some pendant lighting…this is where you can add a personal touch to your kitchen. Make it your own!

How often should you redo your kitchen?

On average, a kitchen needs to be updated every 10-15 years because colors and finishes will wear out. This is usually the time where the more expensive areas like the cabinets and flooring may start to wear out or become outdated.

Design trends also change pretty significantly every decade. So if you want to stay up to date with modern and fresh designs, consider an update every 10 years or so.

Is a kitchen designer worth it?

It’s often worth it to hire a kitchen designer, unless you are on a strict budget. While there are a lot of expenses to a renovation, a kitchen will last you years. So the extra effort and money up front to make the design exactly how you want it will often pay off.

Because full renovations can get pricey, it’s even more important to ensure that you love the final design. A designer can bring your dream kitchen to life.

How do you renovate a galley kitchen?

Go symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Galley kitchens are designed for small kitchens. They make a tight space functional.

You can make the corridor-like design symmetrical and asymmetrical. Symmetrical design has parallel walls whereas asymmetrical design has, well, asymmetrical walls.

Here’s a symmetrical design featuring our PLJW 185.

Add a kitchen island.

If you have the space, adding a kitchen island can be a great way to feel a little less cramped in your galley kitchen.

Try switching from an open to closed design or vice versa.

Some galley kitchens have open walls on both sides to make the kitchen feel more spacious. This is a practical design for small kitchens, but it might lead to high traffic in the kitchen. People may be coming in and out of the kitchen from all directions which can be distracting to the cook.

If you want to control the traffic a little more, you can put a full length wall at one end of your galley kitchen.

Add some seating.

In larger galley kitchens, consider adding some seating. It’s a great way to make the space more accessible to your guests. They can sit down and enjoy socializing while cooking.

Consider full-height cabinets to maximize storage space.

On the opposite side of your kitchen range, you can install full height cabinets to maximize your storage options. Galley gets its name from long narrow kitchens on ships and aircraft. There’s not a lot of space to move let alone store anything, so it’s important to take advantage of your cabinetry.

Invest in a range hood.

A range hood will keep your kitchen air clean and reduce grease-buildup on your appliances, cabinetry, and countertops. Galley kitchens are typically tighter spaces than your average kitchen. So all your cabinets, walls, and countertops are close to your stove that produces heavy smoke and grease. A hood will keep the cooking exhaust at bay.

Can you open up a galley kitchen?

One of the most popular ways to make your galley kitchen bigger is to knock down a wall. Then the entrance and exit to the galley kitchen leads directly into another room.

Expanding your galley kitchen is a great way to make your home feel more spacious. While a closed galley kitchen can feel cramped, an open kitchen may lead to a more comfortable cooking experience.

What comes first in a home renovation?

In most cases, the best area of your home to renovate first is the kitchen or the bathroom. These are two of the most high-traffic areas of your home so renovating them returns the most value in the long run.

Here are 10 popular kitchen trends for 2022.

  • Marble countertops
  • Range hood
  • Tile backsplash
  • Range hood insert
  • Shaker cabinets
  • Hardwood flooring
  • Chevron designs (flooring and backsplashes)
  • Pendant lights
  • Flat-panel cabinetry
  • Pull out cabinets and appliances

How do you modernize an old kitchen?’

  • Invest in stainless steel appliances.
  • Try out some hanging lights.

  • Give under cabinet lighting a try.

What is the ROI on a kitchen remodel?

The ROI on a kitchen remodel is 72.2% in 2021, according to Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value report. The average cost of a minor kitchen remodel was about $26,214 and the resale value was $18,927.  A major kitchen remodel (new cabinetry, flooring, island, and appliances) costs $75,571 with a resale value of $43,364. So major kitchen remodels have an ROI of 57.4%.

Can you remodel a kitchen in stages?

Yes, you can remodel a kitchen in stages. It’s common for people to start with their flooring, then replace cabinets and countertops. If you remodel in stages, that makes it easier for you to live in the space during the remodel, which is budget-friendly.

Even if you do your remodel in stages, you can buy cabinets and appliances and store them in your garage or shed until you have time to install them. Just make sure to keep them away from moisture and out of the sun.

What is the first thing to do when remodeling a kitchen?

The first thing to do when remodeling a kitchen is to pack up everything. Before you start the project, you want everything to be out of the room so you can start demolishing walls, cabinets, and other furnishings.

Once you’re done with the demo process, hire professionals to install any necessary plumbing, electrical, or HVAC systems. As you start the actual remodel, cabinets & countertops, then flooring is a cost-effective way to structure your remodel.

How do I start planning a kitchen remodel?

White kitchen with sleek wall range hood

Decide on the scope of your remodel.

Are you planning a minor or major remodel? Minor remodels might include painting, buying new appliances or replacing cabinet knobs. Major remodels could include flooring, countertops, cabinets, or a combination of all three.

Make a timeline.

Once you’ve decided on what you want to remodel, start making a timeline. Allow room for some flexibility in the schedule, but have a rough idea for when you want the project done.

Think of your timeline as a series of goals. For example, your goal is to have cabinets bought by June 8 and installed by June 24. If delays come up, which they probably will, just adjust the schedule as you go. Be open to dealing with delays and making adjustments on the fly.

Make a budget and stick to it. Set aside a few thousand for setbacks or emergencies.

Setting a budget will help you keep your expenses under control. Especially when planning a major kitchen remodel, you can spend money fast. So set a budget early on for each part of your remodel (cabinets, counters, appliances) etc. Be sure to account for labor costs as well.

Because setbacks are common, reserve a few thousand dollars for them so you have a safety net.

Decide what you are going to do yourself.

One of the best ways you can save money on your kitchen remodel is doing some of it yourself. Decide what parts of the remodel you want to do yourself. Then, don’t forget to add the cost of materials to your budget.

Hire some professionals for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other tricky installations.

There are some areas of your remodel that are best left to professionals. Anything having to do with the foundation of your home or electricity falls under that category. Ask your friends and family for advice on finding a licensed contractor for these jobs. Or check out a tool like Homeadvisor or Thumbtack.

How many years should a kitchen last?

In general, most kitchens will last you 20 years or more. A quality new kitchen should last you a lifetime. Every 10 years or so, design trends change. So you may want to do some updating over time to keep your kitchen modern and fresh if that is important to you.

Should I hire an architect for a kitchen remodel?

Architects are not necessary for kitchen remodels, but they can be a great asset if you have the budget or if you are making structural changes to your home during the remodel. They will help you plan out your kitchen remodel and sketch out blueprints for your new design. If you are making any large additions or changes to your home, an architect will ensure that you meet local regulations.

What is the minimum width for a galley kitchen?

Most galley kitchens are between seven and 12 feet wide. You should have around five feet of space between the opposite countertops for the most comfortable cooking experience. Any less and you will likely feel cramped.

This year, the most popular color for a kitchen is white. It’s bright and it doesn’t discolor in the sun. White shaker cabinets and countertops are a staple of many farmhouse kitchens today. Higher-end kitchens may feature white marble countertops and walls.

What is the best color for a small kitchen?

Neutral colors like white, beige, light gray, or pastel colors are great options for your small kitchen. It all depends on the look that you want, though. Neutral colors will blend into the space, whereas dark blue, green, or black will make a bold statement.

In open kitchens, it’s common for people to match the color scheme of the rest of their home.

Grey is a popular color in 2022, but white reigns supreme. Gray is often mixed with some blue or green so it’s not so plain. To make the space pop, homeowners often choose bright colors for upholstery or rugs.

What is the latest trend in kitchen backsplashes?

Marble backsplashes are one of the latest trends for backsplashes. Subway tiles, cement, and brick backsplashes are going out of style. A marble backsplash complements marble countertops and a marble kitchen island. Marble is a little pricey compared to other materials but it’s a go-to for high-end kitchens right now.

How can I remodel my kitchen cheaply?

Here are a few ways you can save money on your kitchen remodel.

Do some thorough research on contractors.

If you’re not careful, you can easily overpay for a contractor. It’s important to look at a few local options before you make a commitment. If you go with the first bid, you won’t know if it’s way too cheap, or way too expensive!

Find a contractor that has quality work (look for positive reviews) but that doesn’t break the bank.

We wrote all about how to find a contractor to install a range hood here, and you can look for all kinds of home improvement contractors using our method!

Do as much as you can yourself.

The easiest way you can save money is by doing most of the remodeling yourself. This may include painting, flooring, or cabinetry. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work should be left to professionals, but the rest of your remodel can be done by yourself. It ultimately depends on the amount of research and how-to YouTube videos you’re willing to watch.

Install cabinets before flooring.

If you install cabinets first, you can install flooring around the cabinets. This means you don’t spend money on flooring that goes under the cabinets. It’s a cost-effective option for those on a budget.

Keep plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work to a minimum.

Paying for professionals can add up quickly, so if possible, avoid making changes to your plumbing, electrical, or HVAC systems.

Go with affordable, durable materials that won’t break the bank.

When purchasing cabinets, countertops, and backsplashes, compare the prices of materials. Expensive materials include marble, cherry wood, and walnut wood, while plywood, laminate, and particleboard are on the cheaper end. Don’t go with the cheapest products as they won’t last.

Should I remove kitchen soffits?

It is possible to remove kitchen soffits, but not recommended. If you don’t know who installed them before or how they were installed, consult a professional. Removing a soffit will require you to remove some cabinetry too, and that’s a lot of work. If you’re not careful, you’ll interfere with ducting or electrical work.

Do you tile walls before or after fitting a kitchen?

It’s best to tile your walls after installing cabinetry. This way, you won’t have expensive tiles in places that you can’t see. The same is true with tile flooring.  It also lets you maximize the size of your room.

What should you not do in a kitchen remodel?

Here are nine things you should avoid doing as you prepare for a kitchen remodel.

Go with the first contractor you see.

To find a quality contractor at the best price, it’s vital for you to research many different contractors. Check out customer reviews, past work, any licenses they have, and their areas of expertise. Compare at least 3-5 contractors in each of these areas before pulling the trigger. Consider messaging them directly to find out their availability and ask any other questions you may have.

Include little storage space.

No matter what room you’re in, you probably have a lot of stuff. For a comfortable cooking experience, you want your kitchen to be clean and clutter-free. So if you don’t plan for an island, adequate counter space, or underestimate the number of cabinets you’ll need, you’ll regret it. An interior designer can help you plan out your dream kitchen.

DIY the wrong areas.

What you DIY depends on your comfortability and experience. Typically, electrical work and plumbing is a professional’s job. It can be dangerous and against code to tackle this yourself. Cabinets, flooring, and painting can be done yourself with some research. But if you’re not experienced, hire someone out and factor the cost into your budget.

Neglect planning.

A carefully thought out plan is crucial to a successful renovation. Here are some questions to consider as you make a plan.

  • How much of the remodel will you do yourself? How much will a contractor tackle?
  • What areas of your kitchen do you want to remodel?
  • What is your timeline for this project?
  • What is your budget?
  • What is the layout for your new kitchen?

Underestimate your budget.

Of course, forgetting to budget entirely isn’t ideal. But underestimating your budget is a common problem that homeowners may face. This can set back your remodel months or years if you end up not having the funds to complete it.

Make a strict deadline.

Goals are great, but deadlines can be more stressful than you’d like. Setbacks are a part of the remodeling process, so your first timeline likely will need to be adjusted. Just be prepared to account for delays and don’t let them cause you too much stress.

Forget about accessibility.

When designing your kitchen, you want it to look great and be functional. It’s easy to forget about the functional part since you’re not moving around and cooking in your new kitchen. Make sure you have enough space to move around comfortably and maybe allow a few guests to come in and out. Also place your range, microwave, island, and cabinets strategically. You don’t want to do a lot of moving around while cooking.

Avoid lighting.

No matter how nice your kitchen is, it’s difficult to cook if you can’t see. Make sure that you shop for adequate lighting for your kitchen. Hanging lights over an island are popular. You can also invest in a professional range hood for some bright lighting over the stove. Consider undercabinet lights as well.

Choose appliances last.

Appliances, especially your fridge, freezer, and stove, can determine your kitchen layout. So, pick a spot for these large appliances early on before you finalize the design. That way you won’t have to go back and make any significant changes to your plan.

Is quartz cheaper than granite?

Glass hood over a range, granite countertops, and white cabinets

You can find granite and quartz for about $50 to $75 per square foot, on average. The price depends on the type of quartz or granite you want. High-end granite costs between about $100 and $120, while high-end quartz costs around $80.

Howden kitchens cost about the same as IKEA kitchens. In England, prices vary widely for kitchen units based on your local area. Not to mention that every kitchen is different. So, Howden’s doesn’t publish prices on their website. They primarily sell to contractors who install the kitchens. You’ll have to talk with your contractor and ask them for a quote.

Can I redo my own kitchen?

That depends on the scope of your remodel and your skill level. There are some areas of your remodel like plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work, that you should leave to professionals. Others, like painting, flooring, and knocking down walls can be done by yourself. You can complete most minor kitchen remodels on your own.

Can you remodel a kitchen for $5000?

Most homeowners won’t be able to remodel their kitchen for $5000. It may be enough for some small kitchens, but cabinet and countertop prices can add up quickly. To keep the cost down, do most of the work yourself. If your budget is $5000, avoid plumbing, electrical, or HVAC work, which requires professionals.

You can very easily refresh a kitchen for that if you are just thinking about doing one thing like replacing or painting your cabinet fronts. Or if you were just going to get a new kitchen countertop. You could do a couple of things like build an island and change the light and cabinet pulls/handles out, too.

What is the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel?

You’ll likely spend the most money on your kitchen cabinets. Most kitchen cabinet installations cost between $10,000 and $15,000, but if you’re not careful you can spend upwards of $25,000.

IKEA kitchen cabinets are on the lower end and generally cost between $4,000 to $10,000 or more for custom cabinets. They come ready to be assembled which is cheaper than buying pre-assembled cabinets. To save money, you can invest in more doors and less drawers.

Can I remodel a kitchen for $10000?

You likely can do a full remodel of a small kitchen for $10,000. In an average kitchen, most homeowners can afford either new cabinets, countertops, or flooring for 10 grand. You might be able to do two of the three if you don’t have any other projects that you want done.

You would probably have to stick with more affordable materials, like particle board for cabinets and laminate for countertops. It would be wise to do as much of the remodel yourself to save money on labor costs.

You also might consider doing some painting, buying a couple of small appliances, or refinishing your cabinets.

How much does it cost to renovate a small galley kitchen?

You can spend anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000 or more on a small galley kitchen renovation. It depends on how many projects you want to tackle and the quality of materials and appliances you’re buying.

A small renovation might include buying a few small appliances, doing some painting, and replacing your sink. Whereas a larger project may include new custom cabinets or flooring, along with high-end appliances like a new stove.

Can you renovate a kitchen for 20k?

Yes, most homeowners can renovate an entire kitchen for $20,000. You can save significant money by using affordable materials and doing some projects yourself. With $20,000 you won’t be able to splurge on high-end appliances, materials, or custom cabinetry. But you can definitely afford a quality kitchen. IKEA kitchens cost between $15,000 to $20,000 so they are a great option in this price range.

How much should a 10×10 kitchen remodel cost?

A 10×10 kitchen remodel will cost you about $20,000 give or take a few thousand dollars. A complete IKEA kitchen costs between $15,000 to $20,000. But if you want to spend money on higher-end materials or appliances, the cost can spike quickly, up to $40,000 or more.

Can you remodel a kitchen for 15000?

For $15,000, you can likely afford a mid-range kitchen remodel. It won’t blow people away but it will be a modern and functional space that’ll last you years.

You probably won’t squeeze in custom cabinets or any high-end appliances. But as long as you do some of the remodel yourself, you should be able to work with $15k.

How can I afford a kitchen remodel?

Before you open your wallet, always ask yourself: can I do this project myself? Is there a cheaper material that I like just as much? Can I do this in phases? Am I getting quality work from my contractor at an affordable price? These are a few things to consider before you spend money on your remodel.

  • Remodel in stages.
  • Don’t mess with existing electrical or plumbing.
  • Keep an eye out for deals on appliances, cabinets, countertops, and other furnishings.
  • Schedule some time each week to do some work yourself.
  • Paint existing cabinets instead of replacing them.
  • Stay in your home during the remodel.

Why are kitchen renovations so expensive?

Kitchen renovations require a lot of materials between your floor, cabinets, countertop, backsplash, and other areas. Money spent on appliances also adds up, including your stove, refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher. Major renovations require contract work to modify or repair electrical work or plumbing systems.

How much should you spend on a kitchen renovation?

A complete kitchen renovation should cost approximately 10% of the current value of your home. For example, if your home’s value is $600,000, you should spend about $60,000 on a kitchen renovation. You’re not obligated to this number, but it’s a rough estimate of how much you should expect to spend.

How much does labor cost for a kitchen remodel?

Labor costs approximately 15-25% of your kitchen remodel. This number depends on how much work you do yourself and the price of your contractors. If you’re paying over 25%, consider doing research to find more affordable contractors. Also, reconsider what you can do yourself to save money.

How much does it cost to renovate a galley kitchen?

A galley kitchen costs between $15,000 and $20,000 to renovate, on average. It depends on the scope of your remodel. If you make big changes to the room layout, buy high-end appliances, or hire pros for electrical and plumbing work, this price may rise to $30k or more. You may be able to renovate for under $15,000 if the kitchen is small.

Can you renovate a kitchen for 10k?

It will be difficult to do a complete renovation for $10k, unless the kitchen is small. You may be able to afford two major projects or one major project and a couple of minor upgrades. It depends on the quality of materials that you buy.

  • Countertops, refinishing floors, and painting
  • Cabinets
  • A couple of new major appliances (stove, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, etc.)

You can mix and match a few different projects but it will require some extra research to stick to a $10k budget.

That being said, it’s totally possible. Here are 10 great renovation ideas under $10,000 that you can try today.

Why is home renovation so expensive?

There’s a lot of work to do in a home, and it can add up quickly. For major renovations, some people choose to stay in a hotel. That can get pricey if the renovation lasts several weeks or gets delayed.

Also, many homeowners leave most of the work to professionals, even if that means taking out several loans. They are often tempted to go the extra mile when it comes to home renovation. That means replacing flooring instead of refinishing it, replacing cabinets instead of swapping out the knobs and handles, etc.

People want their kitchens to look good, but most have limited or no experience doing a remodel. So it’s important to be mindful of your budget and not break the bank.

How do you pay for a new kitchen?

The best methods to pay for a new kitchen are to pay for each job in full (after the job is done) or come up with a monthly payment plan. For example, if you installed cabinets for $6,500, once that job is done you pay the entire $6,500. Or you come up with a plan to pay $250 a month (or whatever works for you and your contractor) until you hit the total.

Of course, you can take out a loan or use a credit card to pay for your remodel, but you don’t want to take on too much debt. We recommend saving money up front so you don’t have to lose sleep over the cost. Instead, you can focus on getting quality work done in a timely manner.

Use the time you are saving to plan for and anticipate the change. Plan and prepare well so you do it right and can enjoy it!

Is a kitchen redo worth it?

That depends on the scope of the remodel. A minor kitchen is the most affordable. A minor remodel costs $26,214 with an ROI of about 72.2%, according to Remodeling’s cost vs. value report. A major kitchen remodel costs $75,561 and has an ROI of 57.4%. An upscale kitchen remodel costs $149,079 with an ROI of 53.4%.

These percent numbers may seem low, but a kitchen is a long-term investment. You may use it every day for 10 years, 20 years, or more. So even though you’re not recouping 100% of your money, the subjective value of a new kitchen might outweigh its cost – especially if you cook often!

So you have all the more reason to remodel now. Then you can enjoy it instead of waiting to do it right before you list your home for sale.

That wraps up our ultimate list of 90 frequently asked questions on kitchen renovations. That was a lot of information. If you made it all the way through, thank you!

If you’re looking for a specific question, try using control F or command F and searching queries like “budget,” “cost,” or “cabinets.”

How to Conduct a Smooth Small Kitchen Remodel (Step-by-Step Guide)

Do you put flooring under kitchen cabinets?

Yes, you can put flooring under kitchen cabinets. Installing flooring before cabinets gives the kitchen a much cleaner look. You don’t have to spend time cutting around the cabinetry.

Also, you can be flexible with the layout of the cabinets. You’re not committed to one layout as you would be if you install cabinets first.

But, installing flooring first costs a little more. It covers your entire room, even under the cabinetry.

What brings down property value?

Building a home or remodeling without a permit
Mold or mildew damage
Deteriorating foundation
Damaged driveways or pathways
Damaged or old roofing
Leaky plumbing
Rotten wood
Poor or damaged air conditioning or heating systems
Frayed wires
Outdated kitchens and bathrooms
Near a registered sex offender
Near junkyards, power plants, hospitals, or factories
Next to a neighbor’s unsightly home
Wallpaper
Ugly landscaping
Old carpet
Warped floors
Paint chips or uneven coating
Near a poor neighborhood
Next to a freeway, busy city, or other noisy areas

What renovation adds the most value?

In today’s homes, kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most valuable remodels. Most people use the kitchen and bathroom multiple times a day, so they want it to be one of the nicer areas of the home. So, a renovated kitchen and bathroom is a great selling point for your home. They typically add the most value to your home compared to other renovations.
