Who makes the quietest range hood?

At Proline Range Hoods, we have a wide variety of quiet range hoods. Some of the quietest include the PLFW 544 and PLFW 520. They produce about 4.5 sones at max speed. That’s almost twice as quiet as range hoods from big box stores.

Keep in mind that the quietest range hood doesn’t necessarily mean the most powerful. You could have a 200 or 300 CFM hood that’s incredibly quiet. On the other hand, you could have an 1800 CFM hood that’s quiet! Always compare the max CFM to the sone rating before deciding on a hood.

How do I choose a quiet range hood?

To choose a quiet range hood, it’s important to first understand your preferences in the kitchen. Generally, the higher the CFM, the louder the hood. So you need to decide whether you are more willing to sacrifice power for a quiet hood or vice versa. You could also go with a hood somewhere in the middle.

Keep in mind that hoods with efficient blowers will be relatively quiet, even at high CFM ratings. But you won’t be able to find those hoods at big box stores.

Even the low CFM hoods may be quite noisy because they are made with cheaper materials. So, be sure to look for a professional hood.

How many sones is a quiet range hood?

A quiet range hood is about four to five sones, or about 50 dB at max speed. Lower speeds on quiet hoods can get down to just one sone! Most hoods range between seven and nine sones, depending on the quality of the materials and CFM. If you’re getting about 900 CFM or more from the blower at that noise level, you’re looking at a quality range hood.

What is the quietest CFM for a range hood?

You can buy range hoods from big box stores between 200 and 300 CFM. But that doesn’t mean that these hoods are quiet. The noise level depends on the efficiency of the range hood blower or blowers.

To get a good idea of the quietest CFM for a hood, here’s one thing you can do:

Compare two hoods with the same CFM: a range hood from a big box store and a range hood from a company that makes professional hoods. Then, compare the sone ratings on the spec sheets.

It can be helpful to compare companies that manufacture high-quality hoods to each other. Then you can see if there’s any variance in the noise level.

We recommend purchasing a hood with at least 600 CFM. Under 600 CFM simply isn’t enough power to satisfy most homeowners. Even though the hood may be quieter, it more than likely won’t remove all the grease, smoke, and cooking odors from your kitchen.
